The story of Coppélia is about a mysterious inventor, Doctor Coppélius who has made a life-size dancing doll. The doll, Coppelia, sits on her balcony all day reading, speaking to no one. It is so lifelike that Frantz is infatuated with it, and sets aside his fiance, Swanhilde, to swoon over Coppelia. Swanhilda, is infuriated when she sees Franz throwing kisses at Coppelia. Swanhilda soon learns that Coppelia is actually a doll that belongs to Doctor Coppelius and she decides to impersonate the doll, in order to win the love of Franz. Chaos ensues, but all is soon forgiven. Swanhilda and Franz make up and get married and the marriage is celebrated with several festive dances.
